UCSC’s finally opened doors of its Digital Arts Research Center. A whopping $35 million were spent on the building.
The construction of the silver metal and mesh building began in 2004 and completed in 2009. It consists of large classrooms and work spaces designed to promote collaboration across the arts. It also houses the Digital Arts and New Media graduate program. But the faculties in the building feel it is not the money and beauty of the building that will make a difference but the education imparted will. The Digital Arts Research Center is well equipped with traditional classrooms, conference tables and chairs, soundproofed spaces, high-tech computers and more. The building has dedicated staff including 65 faculty and 86 lecturers for around 1,850 students.
The building provides a platform for Digital Arts and New Media M.F.A. program, as well as the digital photography and printing studio, music research labs, drawing and photography classes, and faculty studios. The learning will happen but in an innovative manner.
Through this one of its kind Research and learning centre UCSC wants to break the mould of traditional education. They want to open avenues for people interested in digital media be it photography or digital arts or even fine arts. The building will be home for budding artists, photographers and a lot of talented people who want to sharpen their creative skills.
